The founders of the LiFE Academy have worked as volunteers in the Aboriginal community for over thirty years, the first 25 years at the Gnangara Community with Aboriginal Elder Ken Colbung AO MBE, supporting cultural programmes and training for the younger generations. From 1990 the founders have provided all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people free education in all their courses with a scholarship in Ken Colbung’s name. With him they were asked to speak before the Senate Select Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities about the scaffolding between the vocational and higher education sectors and their project to provide culturally-based training and health care.
In recent years the LiFE Academy has worked with service providers to deliver components of programmes to the Aboriginal community including Stolen Generations programmes with Sister Kate’s Home Kids Aboriginal Corporation and also at Fairbridge. Programmes have included private and community counselling, therapy for pain and stress, food as medicine and healthy lifestyle workshops.
This 10561NAT Certificate IV in Holistic Counselling and Mind-Body Medicine prepares the graduate to be a health and well-being consultant for individuals and groups at a time when Closing the Gap has been again shown to be a major problem. Aboriginal empowerment in their expertise, LiFE understands, is a major factor in forwarding Aboriginal rights, and will lead to the health and well-being outcomes so urgently needed.
Since 2014 LiFE Academy, with the support of the WA government, has been able to offer subsidised places for the culturally-based 10561NAT Certificate IV in Holistic Counselling and Mind-Body Medicine. This initiative is called “Jobs and Skills WA”.
Since 2018, with support also from Jobs and Skills WA, the LiFE Academy is also offering subsidised places in our CHC43315 – Certificate IV in Mental Health. Feedback has been unanimous – it is just what people need for their own health, the health of those around them and the health of society.
Jobs and Skills WA is about investing in training that equips people to take up jobs that are, or will be, in high demand in Western Australia. To do this, Jobs and Skills WA provides a guaranteed, subsidised training place for eligible students enrolled in courses that are deemed State priority qualifications, where a training place is available. Read more information about what Jobs and Skills WA training is available here.
Although Jobs and Skills WA courses are subsidised by the Government of Western Australia, students are required to contribute to their training costs. Students experiencing financial hardship are able to apply to pay by instalment or for a fee waiver that will be assessed on an individual basis. A Fee Waiver Application Form must be completed by the student which will be assessed by LiFE Academy administration for eligibility. The application and evidence submitted will be recorded on the student’s file.
